Daisy Ridley takes on the inspiring true story of Trudy Ederle in the upcoming film “Young Woman and the Sea.”
Based on Glenn Stout’s 2022 book, the movie portrays Ederle’s remarkable journey as the first woman to successfully swim the English Channel.
PEOPLE presents an exclusive glimpse of the film, featuring Ridley in character and capturing behind-the-scenes moments.
“The most astonishing aspect of this narrative is how little recognition Trudy receives for her extraordinary feat,” says Ridley, 31. “Her accomplishment not only marked a personal triumph but also broke new ground for women in sports.”
“I am eager for audiences to witness this captivating story in all its splendor, to embark on this voyage filled with challenges, hope, and ultimately, triumph,” adds the “Star Wars” actress.
Ederle, born to immigrant parents in New York City in 1905, defied societal norms and rose through the ranks of the Olympic swimming team with unwavering support from her older sister and dedicated trainers. Overcoming adversity, she achieved the remarkable feat of swimming the 21-mile stretch from France to England.
Joining Ridley in the cast are Tilda Cobham-Hervey, Stephen Graham, Kim Bodnia, Christopher Eccleston, and Glenn Fleshler.
Director Joachim Rønning, known for his work on “Maleficent: Mistress of Evil” and “Kon-Tiki,” was drawn to Ederle’s story for its inspirational impact, especially for his teenage daughters.
In an effort to capture authenticity, Rønning steered clear of blue screens and CGI, opting for a more immersive filming experience. Ridley’s commitment to the role, including enduring icy waters for extended periods, impressed Rønning.
“Very few actors, regardless of gender, could match Daisy’s level of dedication,” praises Rønning.
“Young Woman and the Sea” hits select theaters on May 31.
