As Cruel Intentions reaches its 25th anniversary, Sarah Michelle Gellar, one of its stars, is commemorating the occasion by sharing nostalgic promotional images from the 1999 film on Instagram.
“Happy 25th #cruelintentions,” wrote Gellar, 46, alongside her post. “Everybody still loves you, and I intend to keep it that way.”
Reese Witherspoon also joined in the celebration, sharing her own tribute on Instagram with the caption, “Cue Bitter Sweet Symphony 🎶💗🥂 Happy 25th Anniversary to Cruel Intentions!”
Gellar starred alongside Ryan Phillippe, Reese Witherspoon, and Selma Blair in the film adaptation of Pierre Choderlos de Laclos’ novel Dangerous Liaisons.
Directed by Roger Kumble, the movie revolves around Annette Hargrove (played by Witherspoon), the daughter of a new headmaster at a private high school in New York City. The plot unfolds as wealthy step-siblings Kathryn Merteuil (Gellar) and Sebastian Valmont (Phillippe) make a bet to seduce Annette.
Known for its provocative storyline and dialogue, including a notable kiss between Gellar and Blair, the film stood out among the teen comedies and dramas of the late ’90s.
The cast has remained close over the years, with Gellar and Blair even recreating their famous kiss. Gellar reminisced about filming the scene in Central Park, recalling the challenges of shooting amidst a live audience.
In December 2023, Amazon announced plans for a television series inspired by Cruel Intentions, set in an elite college in Washington, D.C. The drama, featuring ruthless step-siblings navigating a cutthroat social hierarchy, is set to premiere on the streaming platform.
As Cruel Intentions continues to be celebrated, it remains available for streaming on Prime Video, captivating new audiences with its timeless allure.
